About Algoma Art Society

The Algoma Art Society is the oldest Visual Art Group in the City of Sault Ste. Marie, since it’s inception on January 16, 1948. Our membership consists of visual artists working in Watercolours, Acrylics, Oils, Pastels, Yupo, Encaustics, Collage and Photography.

We are a non-profit organization whose aims are to promote local exhibitions, competitions, workshops, classes and lectures; provide access to prominent artists; to arrange for annual sales of members’ work and to support, encourage and develop the talent and ability of local artists by providing opportunities for them to become more proficient in their field.

Over the many years this organization has been in existence many prominent artists have been associated with us including members of the Group of Seven. Algoma Art Society members traveled on many outdoor painting excursions with F. H. Varley, A. J. Casson and A. Y. Jackson.

Featured Artist

Kathy Godfrey

I am Kathy Godfrey, watercolour artist. My love for colour shines through all my work, whether it is realistic, semi abstract or abstract. Now I am also venturing into acrylics, mixed media and collage as a way of expressing my ideas and emotions. I have had the pleasure and privilege of studying under Linda Szabo for many years. Her teaching and expertise gave me the basics of watercolour as well as the courage to pursue my art. I have also attended watercolour workshops with such artists as Helga Flower, Sterling Edwards and David Smith, each of whom have taught me so much and encouraged me in my art pursuit.

As a Member of the Algoma Art Society (AAS) and The Northern Ontario Art Association (NOAA) I have been fortunate to meet like minded artists. Several of my paintings have now been selected by the NOAA as part of the annual juried travelling exhibition which travels to all 15 northern communities each year. Of the 100 submitted works of art, only 40 of the juried art pieces are chosen to be part of this prestigious exhibition. So I feel honoured. My art has been chosen for exbitit in the La Cloche Art show on Manitoulin Island. I have also exhibited at the Algoma Art Gallery and the Sault Ste. Marie Museum.
