We welcome new members to the Society, hoping that they will gain friendship and camaraderie!

We are a group of Artisans who love to create in diverse ways that include painting and drawing in many mediums. Also very welcome are artisans who create in glass or wood, create jewelry, are into photography or other mediums!

If you feel called to create, connect, and explore, we invite you to step into one of our meetings. Our society leaders will welcome you and provide all the membership information and forms when you arrive.

Meetings

  • Second Wednesday of the month from September to June. Guests are welcome!!
  • Held at 7:00 p.m. on the second floor of the Sault Ste. Marie Museum.
  • Members will be given prior notice of any meeting changes or cancellations.
  • Each meeting starts with an opportunity to sketch, usually a still life presentation.
  • Agenda may include ”What’s on your easel”, giving members a chance to bring their current or finished art to the meeting to be observed by members and receive feedback if requested.
  • Meetings may include a creative art activity which can be shared when final.
  • Discussion may include information on upcoming art exhibitions and sales where members may participate, new art techniques or products, new art supply outlets, upcoming workshops promoted by the Algoma Art Society, or educational opportunities.
  • The agenda may include a guest speaker or artistic demonstration.
  • The agenda may also include “getting to know the artist” segments where an artist may share their “creative journey”.

Membership

Membership is open to any artisan in the Algoma District. The current cost for membership is $40.00, due each September and is valid until the following August 31st.  Membership increases to $45.00 as of September 1st, 2026.

Membership provides:

  • The opportunity to meet like-minded people who enjoy creativity!
  • The opportunity to attend Algoma Art Society monthly meetings.
  • Membership in the Northern Ontario Art Association (which is currently composed of 16 Northern Ontario Art Clubs) and the opportunity to enter their annual juried exhibition.
  • Membership in the Sault Ste. Marie Museum.
  • Early registration for workshops sponsored by the Algoma Art Society.
  • Inclusion in art exhibitions and sales sponsored by the Algoma Art Society.
  • The opportunity to hang your work in the Sault Ste. Marie Museum Gift Shop. Artists take their turn for a month. Names are accepted in the spring and assigned.
  • Your name, email, address and phone number will be included on our Membership and email lists. This information is not shared outside our Society.

Website (algomaartsociety.ca)

  • Provides members with the opportunity to place up to four free photos of your paintings and your bio in the Collage of Artists section on the Algoma Art Society website. Additional art photos up to a maximum of 20 are permitted for a one-time fee of $10.00 for each addition of 4 art photos. Your art photos can be changed periodically.
  • Opportunity to be the Featured Artist on the Algoma Art Society Website for a two-month period.
  • Current or Upcoming Events section indicates monthly meetings and upcoming AAS events.
  • NOAA section – current and past members accepted in annual juried exhibitions.
  • Archives features AAS photos, events and information from 1948 to present.

Workshops

The Algoma Art Society sponsors workshops periodically which include local instructors and those from further afield.  Algoma Art Society members get the first opportunity to enroll for these sessions before they are opened to the public. To take advantage, you must be a paid-up member at the time of registration.

Committees

The Algoma Art Society has included the following committee groups with the aim of sharing their work, fostering friendships in a smaller group and encouraging participation in Algoma Art Society functions and projects.

  • Hospitality

You are encouraged to reach out to these groups to see where you might enjoy sharing your expertise and interest with other Society members.

We are pleased to welcome you to the Society and hope that you will feel comfortable by meeting new friends and will be energized by the creativity of our members. We encourage you to be active in the group and seek ways to contribute.
